Dirk Poor

Still Out Here

Going out on your own and being alone are two different things.

Dirk Poor standing beside the spool at the crossroads at dusk, looking out at the road leading out of town — Dirk could have stayed at the crossroads that evening. There were worse places to be.

Dirk Poor riding out of town along the road toward the falls at dusk — He went out to the falls instead.

Dirk Poor at the base of the falls, hand on the rail of the rusted metal staircase, starting up it — He knows that staircase now. He's been up it enough times to stop counting.

Dirk Poor sitting at the top of the staircase, board beside him, looking out over the town in the last light — Up top he sat down and watched the town go gold, then grey.

Close on Dirk Poor's face in the last light, calm and content — Nobody was up there with him. It wasn't the same thing as being alone.

Wide dusk shot of Dirk Poor small at the top of the staircase with Fortune Falls spread out below and one warm light at the crossroads — Down in the middle of it all, the crossroads light was on, and it wasn't on for nobody anymore.

Going out on your own and being alone are two different things.

One more run.
