Dirk Poor

The One Who Planned

Two people who both keep their word don't need to discuss it.

Dirk Poor at the crossroads looking up at the darkening sky, reaching for the rope coil by the spool — Dirk saw the sky going dark and knew exactly what was coming.

Dirk Poor hurrying toward the spool with a rope in hand and his skateboard under his arm as the wind picks up — He'd made a promise about that spool once. He wasn't about to start breaking it now.

Dirk Poor stopping short as Owen Ustuph kneels at the spool, already halfway through tying it down — Somebody was already there. Already halfway done.

Owen Ustuph pulling a rope tight and setting a stake while Dirk Poor crouches on the far side of the spool with his own rope — He didn't look up. He just nodded at the far side, where the next rope needed to go.

Dirk Poor and Owen Ustuph working opposite sides of the spool in the rain, ropes going down in order — They tied it down together without saying a word about it.

The storm breaking in golden light over the crossroads, Owen Ustuph on the paint bucket checking a knot and Dirk Poor grinning on the spool, one seat empty — Dirk finally knew who tied those knots. Four down two to go.

Two people who both keep their word don't need to discuss it.

One more run.
