Dirk Poor

The Crossroads

You don't have to lead from the front. Just be where people can find you.

Dirk Poor standing at the edge of an empty crossroads at dusk — Fortune Falls had one spot where every street met: the crossroads. After the factory closed, it was the emptiest place in town.

Dirk Poor pushing a big wooden cable spool down the street — So Dirk rolled an old cable spool all the way there and stood it up like a table.

Dirk Poor sitting on top of an upright cable spool at the crossroads in warm streetlight — Every evening after that, he sat on it. He wasn't waiting for anyone. He just made sure he was easy to find.

Dirk Poor setting a small wooden crate on top of the cable spool — He set a crate on the spool with a few things anybody might need.

Dirk Poor leaning in toward the crate on the spool, surprised and smiling — Some mornings, something in the crate was gone. Other mornings, something new was in it.

Dirk Poor sitting on the spool at sunset, smiling, with wheel tracks crossing in the dust — Dirk never saw who. He just kept showing up. And little by little, the tracks in the dust started to multiply.

You don't have to lead from the front. Just be where people can find you.
