Dirk Poor

One More Run

Falling is just the part right before you get back up.

Dirk Poor riding his skateboard alone down an empty street under a gray sky — Some days Dirk skated because it was fun. Some days he skated because it was easier than sitting still.

Dirk Poor standing at the top of a steep concrete bank, looking down the drop — This was the second kind. He rode out to the steepest concrete bank in town, down by the falls.

Dirk Poor mid-fall on the concrete bank, his board shooting out from under him — First try, he fell. Second try, he fell harder.

Dirk Poor sitting at the bottom of the bank, quiet, his board upside down beside him — He sat at the bottom for a while, knee scraped, Hold Fast upside down beside him.

Dirk Poor dusting off his jeans and walking back up the bank with a determined grin — Then he stood up, dusted off, and walked back to the top. "One more run."

Dirk Poor rolling out at the bottom of the bank in golden light, arms out, grinning — He didn't land it clean. But he landed it. And whatever he'd carried down there felt a little lighter on the way home.

Falling is just the part right before you get back up.

One more run.
