Dirk Poor

The Water Stair

You can't see the whole shape of a thing while you're standing in it.

Dirk Poor at the base of the falls looking up at a rusted metal staircase — Dirk had looked at that staircase his whole life and never once climbed it.

Dirk Poor testing the bottom step of the staircase with one foot — He put a foot on the bottom step. It held.

Dirk Poor climbing the wet staircase beside the falls — Halfway up, the spray soaked him through. He kept going.

Dirk Poor at the top of the staircase looking out over the town — At the top, he could see the whole town at once.

Dirk Poor seen from behind, looking out over the rooftops of Fortune Falls — Every street he'd ever ridden. The crossroads sitting right in the middle of all of it, small as a bottle cap.

Dirk Poor sitting on the top step at dusk with his board across his knees — He sat down on the top step and stayed a while. The town looked different from up here.

You can't see the whole shape of a thing while you're standing in it.

One more run.
