Dirk Poor

Nobody Watching

Who you are when nobody's watching is who you are.

Dirk Poor riding alone through an empty open-air market at dusk — The open-air market closed up every night when the sun went down. That night, Dirk was the last one still around.

Dirk Poor stopping beside a trading table with a tipped-over coin jar and scattered coins — The wind had knocked over the coin jar on one of the trading tables. Coins everywhere.

Dirk Poor standing still, looking around the completely empty, dark market — Nobody was watching. Nobody would ever know.

Dirk Poor on his hands and knees, reaching under the table for the last coin — Dirk got down on his hands and knees and picked up every single one, even the one that rolled under the table.

Dirk Poor setting the full coin jar upright on the table with a small rock on its lid — He set the jar back, put a rock on the lid so the wind couldn't get it again, and rode home.

Dirk Poor riding past the crossroads at night under a sky full of stars, smiling — He didn't know it yet, but the crossroads wouldn't be empty much longer.

Who you are when nobody's watching is who you are.
