Dirk Poor

The Trade

A fair trade leaves both sides better off.

Dirk Poor riding up to a cable spool at the crossroads — The morning after the market, Dirk rode to the crossroads like always. Something in the crate was different.

Dirk Poor leaning over a wooden crate on the spool — The roll of tape was gone. In its place: a pack of fresh batteries, exactly what his dead flashlight needed.

Dirk Poor sitting on the spool, shining a flashlight and grinning — Somebody had noticed. Somebody had been paying attention.

Dirk Poor holding a dented metal toolbox, thinking — A trade like that deserved a good one back.

Dirk Poor placing a toolbox into the crate on the spool — So he left the best thing he had: the old toolbox from his half of the factory haul.

Dirk Poor smiling beside the spool, thin wheel tracks leading down the street — Next morning, the toolbox was gone. Thin scooter tracks led off toward the market.

A fair trade leaves both sides better off.

One more run.
