Dirk Poor

The Humming Light

Hope starts with one light coming back on.

Dirk Poor sitting on the spool beside a dark streetlight at dusk — The streetlight at the crossroads had been dead since the factory closed. Dirk had stopped even looking up at it.

Dirk Poor looking up, startled, as the streetlight flickers faintly — Then one night, it buzzed. Then it flickered.

Dirk Poor standing under the glowing streetlight, staring up in amazement — Then it came on. Dirk stared up at it like it was the moon.

Dirk Poor kneeling at the base of the pole by an open access panel — At the bottom of the pole, a little panel hung open. New wires. A few leftover parts.

Dirk Poor looking down at wheel tracks circling the pole — And rollerblade tracks, circling the pole and heading off toward the old rail line.

Dirk Poor sitting on the spool under the glowing streetlight, smiling — Dirk didn't know who. But for the first time in a long time, the crossroads had its own light.

Hope starts with one light coming back on.

One more run.
