Dirk Poor

The Open Court

A game gets better the more people it's open to.

Dirk Poor riding up to the crossroads and stopping short at a hoop on the pole — One morning, there was a hoop at the crossroads. Somebody had bent an old bike rim into shape and nailed it to the pole.

Dirk Poor picking up a worn basketball under the hoop, grinning — The basketball from the crate was sitting right underneath it.

Dirk Poor shooting a basketball that bounces off the rim — Dirk shot. Missed. Shot again. Missed again.

Dirk Poor chasing a bouncing basketball, laughing — He was not good at basketball. He kept shooting anyway.

Dirk Poor cheering with both arms up as the ball drops through the hoop — Finally, one swished through. Dirk whooped loud enough for the whole block.

Dirk Poor riding away on his skateboard, glancing back at the ball under the hoop — When he left, he set the ball back under the hoop, right where whoever was next could find it.

A game gets better the more people it's open to.

One more run.
